MOUNTAIN PLANET and INTERALPIN brought together international experts in Grenoble for CITY CABLE CAR SOLUTIONS 3CS. The focus was on specific projects, scientific findings and strategic approaches to integrating cable cars into urban transport systems. The compact conference format, combined with a guided tour of innovative projects on display, impressively demonstrated the potential of cable car-based solutions for urban transport and was very well received by a highly interested specialist audience, underlining the high relevance of the topic.
Innsbruck/Grenoble, 05/05/2026. The second edition of CITY CABLE CAR SOLUTIONS 3CS successfully established itself as an international platform for urban cable car mobility as part of MOUNTAIN PLANET. Around 100 participants attended the conference programme. The high quality of the presentations and the active engagement of the international specialist audience underscore the relevance of the topic. “The very positive feedback and international participation show that CITY CABLE CAR SOLUTIONS 3CS is a forward-looking format. The combination of international expertise, strategic perspectives, practical insights and direct exchange makes the format particularly valuable and offers added value for the industry. “We would like to thank MOUNTAIN PLANET and the ALPEXPO team for their excellent cooperation and for strengthening our decades-long partnership, as well as our industry partners,” summarises Stefan Kleinlercher, project manager at INTERALPIN, who was on site with a delegation.
The programme of presentations brought together perspectives from the worlds of politics, planning, academia and operations. The event was opened by Salah Regan, Manager of Knowledge & Innovation at the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), who provided an overview of the role of cable car systems in urban transport. The establishment of a dedicated UITP working group on urban cable cars underscores the growing importance of this topic. Alexandre Magny, Director General of the Association of Transport Authorities (GART), represented a key voice for the French transport authorities (AOM) and spoke on transport policy strategies.
The practical examples from France were particularly impressive: Project managers Benjamin Croze and Francis Grass, responsible for the urban cable car systems in the Île-de-France region (“Câble 1”) and Toulouse (“Téléo”), provided insights into planning, implementation and operation. The presentations clearly illustrated the process steps and highlighted that successfully implemented systems are increasingly serving as a starting point for further expansion projects.
From an academic perspective, too, the topic is gaining momentum. Recent studies are increasingly focusing not only on technical aspects but also on social ones, such as perceptions of safety and usability in an urban context, as transport researcher Stephan Tischler highlighted.
A key element of 3CS in Grenoble was the direct application of theory to practice: as part of a guided tour, participants gained insights into specific technological solutions and current developments, such as cable car cabins specially designed to meet the requirements of urban transport, which were showcased at the trade fair.
The successful implementation in Grenoble is based on the close cooperation between INTERALPIN and MOUNTAIN PLANET, as well as the support of industry partners Doppelmayr and POMA/HTI. “The collaboration with INTERALPIN on CITY CABLE CAR SOLUTIONS 3CS as part of MOUNTAIN PLANET worked exceptionally well and contributed significantly to a high-quality and internationally relevant programme. We see great potential in this format and look forward to further strengthening this exchange in the future within the framework of MOUNTAIN PLANET,” emphasises Jérôme Riff, Managing Director of ALPEXPO.
The successful event in Grenoble marked another important step in the development of CITY CABLE CAR SOLUTIONS 3CS as an international platform for cable car-based mobility. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from all participant groups confirms the demand for the event and lays the foundation for the further development of the format.
The next edition of CITY CABLE CAR SOLUTIONS 3CS will take place as part of INTERALPIN from 20 to 23 April 2027 at the Innsbruck Exhibition Centre. INTERALPIN is currently present at the NSAA National Convention & Tradeshow in Carlsbad, CA (4–7 May 2027). At MOUNTAIN PLANET, there was also an initial exchange with Mike Reitzell, the new President and CEO of the National Ski Areas Association.
