CITY CABLE CAR SOLUTIONS 3CS.

At the 2026 MOUNTAIN PLANET in Grenoble, CITY CABLE CAR SOLUTIONS (3CS) offered exciting insights into urban mobility solutions. As early as 2025, at the INTERALPIN in Innsbruck, the event impressed attendees with innovative approaches and sustainable concepts for the urban transportation of the future.

Program 2026

1.00 p.m. - Promoting cable cars as an urban transport mode

This presentation will highlight the work programme of the Cable Car Working Group, showcasing how UITP leverages its expertise and global network in urban mobility to support the development of cable-propelled transport. It will also explore future opportunities and the evolving role of cable cars as a sustainable and inclusive component of urban transport systems as well as improving collaboration with all those involved in Cable Systems, urban or not.

Speaker: Salah Regan (UITP)

1.30 p.m. - Integrating urban cable car into transport policy: challenges, lessons learnt and future prospects

The presentation examines the development of urban cable car transport as a fully-fledged mode of transport and demonstrates how it offers practical solutions to complex urban challenges. Using completed projects as examples, it shows how cable cars provide an efficient alternative, particularly in areas that are difficult to access – such as those crossed by rivers, valleys or dense infrastructure. It also discusses integration into existing transport networks, technical adaptations, and the importance of early planning and fostering public acceptance. The presentation also addresses institutional and financial barriers that stand in the way of wider adoption, and highlights how cable cars can provide concrete solutions to mobility problems in isolated or hard-to-reach neighbourhoods. An exciting insight into a transport concept that can bring about lasting change in cities!

Speaker: Alexandre Magny (GART)

2.00 p.m. - From mountains to cities – Scientific insights into cable cars as urban transport systems

Stephan Tischler, a transportation scientist at the University of Innsbruck, explores the potential and challenges of cable cars as urban transport systems. This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of current studies and research findings analyzing the impact of cable cars on mobility, urban planning, and society. Using concrete examples, both positive effects and critical aspects are highlighted, with a focus on previously underrepresented regions and topics.

Speaker: Stephan Tischler (University of Innsbruck)

2.30 p.m. - The first urban cable car in Île-de-France: a new mode of transport designed to integrate with the existing network

Speaker: Benjamin Croze (Ile de France Mobilite)

3.00 p.m. - Téléo cable car: a model of efficiency and a high-quality solution offering new mobility prospects for Toulouse

Francis Grass, former president of Tisséo Ingéniérie, takes the audience on a journey to discover Téléo, one of France’s exemplary urban cable car systems. This presentation highlights how this project not only offers an innovative mobility solution but also serves as a model for sustainable urban development. Mr Grass shares valuable insights into project management, public engagement, and the strategic integration of Téléo into Toulouse’s multimodal transport system. He demonstrates how urban cable cars, through their environmental and economic efficiency, open up new possibilities for mobility and bring lasting improvements to quality of life in urban areas of all sizes.

Speaker: Francis Grass (Tisséo Ingénierie)

3.30 p.m. - Q&A Session with all speakers

4.10 p.m. - Guided Tour for all participants

Program 2025

3.00 p.m. - Key Note: Urban mobility

Transport transition, climate transition, digitalisation – How will we be travelling in cities in the future?

Speaker: Claudio Büchel (Fachhochschule OST, Deputy Director of Verkehrsbetriebe Glattal)

3.30 p.m. - Best Practice: A cable car for Trieste

An innovative urban mobility project, which is characterised by the unique nature and the Habsburg architecture.

Speaker: Giulio Bernetti (Director of the Department of Spatial Planning, Environment, Public Works and Cultural Heritage of the City of Trieste)

4.00 p.m. - Best Practice: How to shift towards public transport – can ropeways help?

Up-to-date transport planning along the best practice example Câble C1.

Public transport networks are the backbone of urban life. New public transport services are urgently needed but implementing can be challenging and requires many steps. One exceptional role model in improving its network towards the needs of the people is Paris/Val-de-Marne region. The city is currently implementing several major projects, including the Câble C1 ropeway.

We will break down the ideal process for implementing a new transport solution and show how to satisfy the resident´s requirements and commuters’ expectations to improve the mobility shift through the example of the Paris region. Get some insights from the planning perspective and the transport impact of this outstanding project.

Speaker: Benedikt Prinzing (Transport planner at Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH)

4.30 p.m. - Panel discussion: Urban mobility as a balancing act

Will the future bring pillars instead of rails to Europe's metropolises?

Moderator: Stephan Tischler (Transport scientist, University of Innsbruck)

Panelists: Claudio Büchel (Deputy Director of Verkehrsbetriebe Glattal), Giulio Bernetti (Director of the Department of Spatial Planning, City of Trieste), Konrad Bergmeister (Deputy Head of the Institute of Structural Engineering at BOKU University Vienna), Benedikt Prinzing (Transport Planner Doppelmayr), Dominic Bosio (Export Sales Director LEITNER ropeways)

5.00 p.m. - India’s roadmap: A national showcase

Keynotes & discussions

Austrian Cable Car Conference

The Austrian Cable Car Conference highlighted current topics and future developments that will become increasingly important. As part of the workshops under the motto “Strategy 2040 - The Future of Skiing”, the focus was on the future of winter sports.

INAC Conference

The Inter-Alpine Natural Hazards Conference (INAC), which addresses current and future challenges in the field of natural hazards in Alpine regions, was held for the first time.

The overlap between INAC and INTERALPIN enabled an exceptionally intensive dialogue between science, infrastructure and technology, and industry under the motto "Industry meets Science."

Snow Crystal Gala

The SNOW CRYSTAL GALA 2025 celebrated the 50th anniversary of INTERALPIN with 650 guests. The "Snow Crystal of Winter Sports," an award presented since 1992 for outstanding achievements in skiing, was presented to ORF.

The Austrian Ski Federation (ÖSV) honored a media outlet that has shaped winter sports for decades and, with great dedication, brought it into people's living rooms.

OITAF Seminar

On May 7, 2025, the OITAF seminar took place, addressing the question of whether the cable car industry is facing a structural upheaval due to artificial intelligence.

Experts from France, Italy, Austria, and Switzerland discussed the opportunities and risks of AI in areas such as engineering, design, and operations. The seminar provided an exciting forum for knowledge transfer and facilitated an intensive exchange about the future of the cable car industry.
